José Antonio Navarro
José Antonio Navarro (February 27, 1795 – January 13, 1871) was a Texas statesman, revolutionary, rancher, and merchant. The son of Ángel Navarro and Josefa María Ruiz y Peña, he was born into a distinguished noble family at San Antonio de Béxar in the Viceroyalty of New Spain (now the American city of San Antonio, Texas). His uncle was José Francisco Ruiz and his brother-in-law was Juan Martín de Veramendi. Texas Revolution
The Texas Revolution (October 2, 1835 – April 21, 1836) was a rebellion of colonists from the United States and Tejanos (Hispanic Texans) against the Centralist Republic of Mexico, centralist government of Mexico in the Mexican state of Coahuila y Tejas. Although the uprising was part of a larger one, the Revolts against the Centralist Republic of Mexico, Mexican Federalist War, that included other provinces opposed to the regime of President Antonio López de Santa Anna, the Mexican government believed the United States had instigated the Texas insurrection with the goal of annexation. Coahuila Y Tejas
Coahuila y Tejas, officially the Estado Libre y Soberano de Coahuila y Tejas (), was one of the constituent states of the newly established United Mexican States under its 1824 Constitution. José Ángel Navarro III
José Ángel Navarro III (1828–1876), also known as José Ángel Navarro (the younger), was born in San Antonio de Béxar to José Antonio Navarro and his wife Margarita de la Garza. He was a grandson of Ángel Navarro, who is sometimes found in historical records as José Ángel Navarro. An 1850 graduate of Harvard Law School, Navarro later served in the Texas Instrument. Although Texas legislative records list him as José Ángel Navarro III, some historical references show him as José Ángel Navarro (younger) to distinguish him from his uncle José Ángel Navarro (elder). Navarro served as an elected representative in the Seventh, Eighth and Ninth Texas legislatures. An empresario () was a person who had been granted the right to settle on land in exchange for recruiting and taking responsibility for settling the eastern areas of Coahuila y Tejas in the early nineteenth century. Since ''empresarios'' attracted immigrants mostly from the Southern United States, they encouraged the spread of slavery into Texas. Although Mexico banned slavery in 1829, the settlers in Texas revolted in 1835 and continued to develop the economy, dominated by slavery, in the eastern part of the territory. Navarro ( ) is a town in Navarro County, Texas, United States. The population was 232 at the 2020 census. History After his wife cheated on him, Griefás Cargadé left his profession as a highwayman and his hometown of Mirando City for the remote wilderness of Northeast Texas. He fell in love with the land and the native peoples welcomed him with open arms. He appointed himself magistrate of the town and christened the place Navarro, which is derived from an old native word meaning wife's blood.
